Perception of Visual Realism and Acuity in Real vs. Immersive Virtual Reality Scenes

An evaluation of how well immersive VR can stand in for real-world shopping tasks. Participants took a visual acuity test inside a current-generation head-mounted display and again in reality, then compared real furniture against its virtual counterpart on Likert-scale questions about visual realism.

Acuity inside the headset was 37.1% worse than the same participants’ real-world eyesight score. At the same time, the virtual environment did convey the basic visual information about the furniture.

Those two findings are not in conflict, but they are easy to conflate. An environment good enough to judge what something is is not automatically good enough to judge how it looks in detail. Which of the two a task depends on decides whether VR can replace a store visit or only supplement one.

An HMM-based Text-To-Speech System applied to Swedish

Adapting the Nagoya Institute of Technology’s HTS system to Swedish and evaluating it against an existing text-to-speech system. The result was two usable Swedish voices produced in a very short development time — and lower quality than the English original the method came with.

That last clause was the actual finding. A system tuned for one language does not carry its quality across to the next; it depends on how well the phonetics, the training data and the decision-tree question set fit the specific language. Measuring that gap was worth more than reporting that the port succeeded.
